On Monday, June 24, the All India Senior Men’s Selection Committee announced the squad for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in Harare, starting on July 6.
Along with Parag, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, and Tushar Deshpande were also selected for the first time. Dhruv Jurel, known for his performances in the Test arena, also received his first limited-overs call-up.
The Rajasthan Royals’ official X account (formerly known as Twitter )shared a video featuring their captain, Sanju Samson, praising Riyan Parag. Samson recalled a memorable match against Delhi Capitals at Kotla, where Parag scored a fifty at just 17 years and 175 days old, breaking Samson’s record for the youngest player to score a half-century in IPL history.
Here’s what Sanju Samson said:
“Riyan has always been a very interesting name in my own head actually. Like right throughout he has come here in this franchise. Right from the game he played against Delhi Capitals in Kotla, when he broke my record of the youngest guy to score a half century in IPL, that game told me this guy is special. This guy has some insane power. I think his bat speed, his composure.”
Parag had a remarkable IPL 2024 season, marking a strong comeback since his debut in 2019. Despite facing criticism for inconsistent performances, he amassed 573 runs in 15 innings with four fifties, boasting a strike rate of 149.22. His success in the IPL 2024 has paved the way for his selection to the national team, reflecting his growth and potential as a cricketer.
