The stage was set for an epic showdown as SRH vs KKR faced off in the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final. The match took place on May 26th, 2024, at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
SRH Innings Against KKR
Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and chose to bat first, as predicted given their better record at protecting totals this IPL. They defended what appeared to be a low total two nights before, but the pitch worsened due to a lack of dew. They expect no dew again and have opted to stick with what has been working for them.
Mitchell Starc get Abhishek Sharma in his first over the ball hits top of off stumps after starting around leg.
Travis Head went 11 balls without a strike before Arora delivered a corker. Head nicks the ball. SRH scored 6 for 2 in two overs. The head got on the golden duck. Starc was on fire, as he dismissed Rahul Tripathi in the fifth over of the contest. Harshit Rana quickly secured Nitish Reddy. Aiden Markram smashed Andre Russell’s ball straight to long-on. Following that, KKR were 62 for 5 in 10.2 overs.
That was the lowest score in an IPL final, whether batting first or second. Andre Russell finished with three wickets. Each of the last five bowlers had taken at least one wicket. Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora were outstanding in five overs, followed by Harshit Rana, the spinners, and Russell.
You can’t blame SRH here. The ball simply did too much for a Twenty20 match. The new ball seamed and swung, the old ball gripped and spun, and KKR’s bowlers were simply too brilliant.
SRH were knocked out for 113 in 18.3 overs. Pat Cummins is the leading scorer with 24.
KKR Batting Against SRH
Pat Cummins had taken the new ball with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Sunil Narine had pulled him for a six on the first delivery; Cummins comes third up, sends midwicket back, tucks him up, and draws a catch at deep midwicket. The score was 11 for 1 in 1.2 overs.
Venkatesh Iyer took on the SRH bowler and played aggressively, scoring 52 runs in 26 balls while blasting the ball all around the field. Rahmanullah Gurbaz played calmly, scoring 39 runs off 32 balls.
Victory For KKR
It was great to watch the match between SRH vs KKR . A complete thrashing of SRH by KKR, who have had a terrific season, lifting the standard even more. They were the top batting and bowling team in the competition. From the opening tandem of Sunil Narine and Phil Salt to the six bowlers who performed consistently match after match.
Then there’s the Iyers in the midst, and Andre Russell, who adores the franchise for everything they’ve done for him, is having his finest bowling season ever. Everything has fallen into place for them. We will now leave them to their festivities and provide you with a preview from our final report.
Mitchell Starc led the Kolkata Knight Riders won their third IPL triumph, their second in Chennai, as they annihilated the tournament’s second-best squad, just as they did in the 2015 World Cup final.
Starc began with probably the best ball of the season, and the most complete attack of the tournament was too strong for Sunrisers Hyderabad on a wicket that provided seam movement for at least seven overs before gripping off the surface.
SRH were knocked out for 113, the lowest total in an IPL final, which KKR chased down with 57 balls remaining with to Venkatesh Iyer’s blitz of 52 off 26. Five of KKR’s six bowlers got wickets in their first over, including a golden duck by SRH’s talisman Travis Head against Vaibhav Arora in the second over.
It’s difficult to find fault with SRH for taking chances when KKR’s plan was simple: while the ball is moving, just reduce poor balls and experiment less. Whenever SRH tried to press the pace, they lost wickets.
