TVS Motor is expanding its long-term partnership with German automaker BMW Motorrad to develop electric vehicles (EVs) and future technologies in the country.
The companies are planning to come up with the first electric two-wheeler within the next 24 months.
The companies are targeting joint development of new platforms and future technologies, including urban-centric electric vehicles.
Partnership deed
The two brands entered a long-term strategic partnership in 2013 with the aim of manufacturing entry-level performance motorcycles in the sub-500cc category.
The BMW G310 R and its ADV counterpart – the 310 GS – were the first two products to emerge from this partnership.
The powertrain was shared with the TVS Apache RR310, a fully-faired entry-level performance motorcycle, which consistently outsold its BMW-badged counterpart due to its lower pricing.
While the two BMW products failed to make an impact on the market, the partnership has been sustained with a new-found focus on electric mobility.
Comment from TVS Motor
Sudarshan Venu, Managing Director, “The new world of future mobility encompasses a strong play through alternate solutions, including electric mobility.
Expanding this successful partnership to EVs and other newer platforms will create opportunities to deliver advanced technology and aspirational products to global markets and bring valuable synergies to both companies.”
