Kathmandu, August 28, 2026: Rescue teams are continuing operations following a devastating flash flood disaster affecting areas near the Nepal-China border.
The disaster followed a major collapse involving ice, rock and water in the Himalayan region, sending destructive torrents through valleys and settlements.
The reported death toll has continued to rise, while hundreds of people remain missing across Nepal and neighbouring Tibet.
Roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other infrastructure have been damaged, complicating rescue operations.
Authorities are also monitoring barrier lakes created by landslides and debris, amid concerns that additional water releases could trigger further flooding.
Rescue operations were temporarily affected by fears surrounding one such lake but later resumed as conditions changed.
The disaster has become one of the region’s most serious recent natural catastrophes, with Nepal and China coordinating emergency operations.
